Mr. Richard Barton
Richard Barton is married to Caroline Barton and father to their two girls, Monroe and Mercy. He is the eldest of three children to Anne Marie Barton and Richard Barton Sr and has deep family and community roots within the islands. Richard is Jamaican by birth but has spent most of his life in the Cayman Islands. Throughout the years, he has maintained close relationships with friends and family in these two jurisdictions which he regards as his twin homes.
Richard is the Founder and Managing Partner of Barton Attorneys. After receiving dual academic scholarships from the Cayman Islands Government and Walkers, he was admitted to practice as an attorney in the Cayman Islands in 2006. Prior to his admission in the Cayman Islands, Richard was admitted as a Barrister in England and Wales in 2005 (non-practicing). Richard is also a member of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London.
Prior to establishing his own firm, Richard worked in a leading global offshore law firm as an Associate where he practiced Dispute Resolution, General Commercial law, and Insolvency. He was previously Crown Counsel in the Office of the Honourable Attorney General’s Chambers.
Richard is a two-term incumbent Council Member of the Cayman Islands Legal Practitioner’s Association (“CILPA”) and is primarily responsible for firms with ten attorneys or less, as well as leading the CILPA education sub-committee. He also sits as a member of the Legal Advisory Council along with, amongst others, the Hon. Attorney General and Hon. Chief Justice.
Additionally, Richard is the current Chairperson of the Business Staffing Plan Board, Deputy Chair of Planning Appeals Tribunal, Deputy Chair of the Health Appeals Tribunal, member of Police Service Commission chaired by His Excellency the Governor, member of the Ethics Committee of Health City Cayman Islands and a member of the CUC Cayman Islands Youth Football League Board of Directors. Richard was also the previous Chair of the Planning Appeals Tribunal and the Cayman Islands Football Association Disciplinary Committee.
